VALET SOAP OPERA IN A PARKING LOT.
CONEY ISLAND
Part of a temporary public art program celebrating the Columbus Bicentennial, five architects were selected to create replacements to one of the more banal parts of urban infrastructure: the parking booth. CONEY ISLAND borrows from the conic section geometry of its neighbor, the Great Southern Theater, to make a microhome in a sea of parking for its valet inhabitants.
The plastic interior/exterior was CNC milled from high density foam which was fireproofed and given a waterproof hard coat shell. CONEY ISLAND is a recipient of an AIA Ohio Merit Award and an AIA Columbus Merit Award for Design.(photo credits: Andrew Spessard Photography)
