LUXURY HOTEL FOR DOG LOVERS

DIGS

Architecture typically prioritizes the needs of humans, while the subverted needs of companion animals are simply accommodated. Accommodations are provisions that meet basic requirements for food, water, and shelter.  DIGS seeks to exceed this by interrogating distinctions between standard vs. luxury, kenneling vs. homing, domestic vs. wild, and confinement vs. freedom.

These seemingly contradictory relationships are blurred by superimposing a LUXURY HOTEL onto a SHELTER for STRAYS. This superimposition sets up a range of relationships between humans and animals, from minimal to fully integrated interactions. This is both a model for human/animal interaction as well as an economic model since the hotel, as a destination for animal lovers, provides a supply of volunteers and revenue for the shelter.

DIGS was a finalist in the 2021 STRAYS competition.
