Malama Learning Center Competition
Kapolei HI

"Daedal Boundaries" is Blostein/Overly's entry to the Malama Learning Center Design Competition. The site for the project, the City of Kapolei on the island of O'ahu, would play host to this 25,000 square foot facility nurturing conservation and the arts by housing classrooms, conference rooms, spaces for formal and informal teaching, meetings, and workshops, a performance and lecture hall seating 300, a dance studio, studios for artists and scientists in residence, and exhibition spaces. For the Malama Learning Center, an ecosystem composed of building and landscape was developed. The boundary between the two conditions becomes daedal; intricate. The system used to embody this organization and imprint the site became a field of “landswell gardens” created from earth excavated from the site. These gardens are further articulated through their method of fabrication which weaves together program with outdoor space and become a map for construction of the building as a community event.
